It's Nice To Meet You!
Welcome to our Oak Abode! Thanks for stopping by. We're passionate about DIY remodel & design, and we're currently fixing up our 100-year old home. We're going to do our best to keep you posted along the way with tips, tricks, successes AND failures. Here's a little bit of our background.
We're Newlyweds.
We got married in March, 2018 in Wickenburg, Arizona. We had a destination wedding (we live in Wisconsin), and would recommend the same to anyone & everyone. It was so special to spend a few days with our friends & family, everyone together. It was on the smaller side (about 80 people) and we loved the intimacy. We drove from Wisconsin to Arizona so we could bring our two pups along on the journey.
We're Dog-Crazy.
On that note, meet our mutts! Fly is a Border Collie, and Freya is a super-mutt. Probably some German Shepherd, Labrador, Border Collie, and something small & loud (Beagle?). Anyway, we love them both to pieces. Both are rescues, too. I grew up with dozens of dogs, but most were from breeders. Once we adopted our first, we couldn't go back to buying. A dog is a dog, through and through. And we will be rescuing for life, now. Oh, we also have a cat. His name is Sitka. He is probably the nastiest creature you'll ever meet, but he has a home for life with us. Kathleen loves him. Ian tolerates him. Most of the time.
We're Totally Winging It.
With the growth of the internet, the world is changing. You can learn to do ANYTHING. And we're living proof. Ian is a vertical engineer in the US Army Reserve, and has deployed twice to the middle east. He has some experience in construction as an electrician, but most of this stuff, we're learning as we go. Kathleen went to college for design, but went straight into work as a self-employed photographer. In other words, neither of us have any "official" training in remodels, home flipping, etc.. But we're also firm believers that, for most of this stuff, it doesn't matter. We're passionate about self-reliance and learning. We hire out for the highly technical stuff (plumbing, etc.), but we're learning a lot as we go. Plastering, drywalling, painting and refinishing, to name a few. A home should be a good investment, as well as a sanctuary. Though it takes a lot of work, the best way to ensure both is to be willing to learn & get your hands dirty. We really believe it makes it all that much more rewarding in the end.
